*Featured Volunteer Opportunity: Trunk-Or-Treat on Tillman Street
United Way of the Mid-South needs you for “Trunk or Treat on Tillman Street”! Morning and afternoon hours are available on Saturday, October 31st from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. Volunteers are crucial in making this event a success. The positions needed for the upcoming event include: activities & games assistant, parking and traffic control attendant, bouncy house assisting with orderly lines, on-site decorating, food prep, and trash removal.
Volunteers can also come dressed in family friendly costumes (nothing scary) and participate in the costume parade.*
October 15 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. |Allies for Faith and Finances: HopeWorks strives to serve the under-resourced in the community by providing hope and a job. HopeWorks is seeking volunteers for the Allies for Faith and Finances offered to students in the Personal Career and Development classes. The volunteers will assist the program supervisor in teaching students on how to finances through various resources.
October 16 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. | Lovebuilders and Lovebuilders Kids with the Neighborhood Christian Center: LoveBuilders and LoveBuilders Kids offers monthly family enrichment programing designed to help promote and support healthy marriages and families through fun activities, Biblical lessons, and keynote speakers. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve dinner, facilitate fun children’s activities, set up and clean up, and more.
October 17 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. | Steward’s of Children Training: Steward’s of Children is Memphis Child Advocacy Center’s evidence-based child sexual abuse prevention training for adults. Over 14,000 adults in Shelby County have taken Steward’s of Children sexual abuse prevention and response training. Together, we are creating a network of trained, proactive adults watching out for our community’s kids. Sign up today to learn how to advocate for our children!
October 17 from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | Face paint with Community LIFT: Sign up to paint faces during the Soulsville USA Festival, located in South Memphis on College Street between McLemore and Saxon. This is a great opportunity to put your artistic skills to use for the benefit of a beautiful community. 10 volunteers needed.
October 17 from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. | Create a Bike Course for Community LIFT: Volunteer during the Soulsville USA Festival to design a bicycle course for kids. Community LIFT will provide bikes, chalk, cones, and any other supplies that may be needed.
October 19 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. | Feast for Friends: Volunteer with Friends for Life and help prepare and serve a hot, nutritious dinner to HIV positive clients and their caregivers. Slots are full? No worries- this event happens every 3rd Monday of the month.
October 23 from 5:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. | Flick or Treat with Memphis Botanic Gardens: Volunteers will help Memphis Botanic Gardens host movie night! Volunteers will help with craft and activity stations, concessions, and more. Volunteers must be at least 15 years old without an adult.
October 30 from 5:30 p.m. – October 23 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. | Kroc Center Fall Fun Bash: This event is FREE and open to the community. Beginning at 5:30 pm, they will have family-friendly games for all ages and music. The Kroc Center hopes to be the hub for trick-or-treating and Memphis’ best costumes. Volunteers will help with carnival style games, monitoring free play in the inflatables, serving food, and other activities.
Weekends from October 2 – 31 from 6:30 – 11:00 p.m. | Corn Maze First Aid Support with the Medical Support Command: MSC will be supporting the Jones Orchard Haunted Corn Maze this October. Volunteers need to be either medically Certified as a paramedic, nurse, first responder, doctor, nurse, practitioner or American Heart Association certified – all with current license. MSC will furnish all equipment unless you want to bring your own First Aid bag.
A paranormal ghost hunter group will be sharing the MSC First Aid tent.
Weekdays from October 20 – 30 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. | Old Fashioned Harvest Festival with Memphis Botanic Garden: Volunteer to learn as students learn about arachnids as they weave their way through a spider maze, make an old-fashioned corn hush flower, pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch and much more. Volunteers will be stationed at craft or discovery stations. Scripts will be given 1 week before the festival. Volunteers will be stationed with another instructor. Volunteers must be at least 15 years old.
ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Hope Works is looking for volunteers to work at the front desk. Volunteers will greet visitors and answer the phone. Light clerical work may also be included. Hope Works is an organization that seeks to serve the under-resourced through outreach programs.
Frayser-Raleigh Senior Center is looking for a volunteer to instruct a computer literacy class for their patrons. This volunteer must have a basic knowledge of computers and develop their own curriculum. The class can be scheduled based on the volunteer’s availability.
The Memphis Public Library and Information Center has the following opportunities to serve at the library in their new Teen Lab, Cloud901 housed in the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library:
– Sound Mixing Lab Facilitator: Enhance classroom/studio learning by applying tools and techniques of audio engineering and music production in a real-world setting by guiding teens in mastering the creative process from ideation to final product.
– Video Production Facilitator: Substantively contribute to the Cloud901 creative learning environment by leading and developing teen programs with video production.
– Coding Workshop Facilitator: Facilitate basic and intermediate level coding workshops to teen Library customers.
– Makerspace Facilitator: Lead making workshops for teens by facilitating learning through interactive and engaging lessons.
– Art Studio Facilitator: Create showcases of teen products for public display by facilitating basic and intermediate level art and design workshops to teen Library customers. This is a perfect opportunity for a retired artist or graduate student ready to put their fine arts teaching to the test.
Join the Costume Team at Theatre Memphis. Occasionally the costume department also needs help with storage organization and computer data entry (MS Word and Outlook). Everyone who volunteers at Theatre Memphis will receive a comp voucher for a free ticket to the show for which they have helped.
Create care packs at Baptist Trinity Hospice. Provide small sacks of snack food such as chips, cookies, mints and a small bottle of water to family members on the Baptist Trinity Hospice unit.
Garden Volunteer at Overton Park: Garden volunteers perform garden and grounds maintenance. Duties may include general cleanup of park grounds, planting weeding and mulching flower beds, removal of non-native invasive plant species. Requirements: All skills are taught on the job as needed. Volunteers are required to attend orientation and annual refresher training. Must be 18 or older. Opportunities are also available for families and groups of young people.
Help the American Red Cross of the Mid-South as they prepare for and respond to disasters of all sizes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, through its Disaster Action Teams (DAT). Volunteers provide disaster relief to meet the emergency needs of people affected by house fires, storms, tornadoes, floods, transportation accidents, and man-made disasters.
